Broken tooth, lost fillings – we fix that every day!
So the other day I had a young bloke come see me. Naturally he’d had typically bad dentist experiences in the past. Not much explanation or discussion about treatment, no help to prevent further problems happening. So it wasn’t a surprise when he told me his broken tooth happened 18 months ago, but now was so painful he couldn’t sleep at night!
Toothaches, broken teeth, lost fillings, accidents, trauma, tooth infections – we do our best to make sure dental emergencies are seen on the same day. Sometimes these problems can’t wait! Most days at Verdant Dental we will have two dentists on duty. Just call us on 93793736 and we’ll see you! Sometimes on our lunch break the answering machine is on – do make sure to leave your contact number clearly so we can call you back ASAP!
By the time you get a toothache, it’s probably too late!
Anyway, had a quick look around and could see a really rotten tooth getting infected. If we’d seen him a few days after it had broken, we might have been able to fix it! Unfortunately, this one was well beyond saving, so we continued to have a good examination of everything else. Dental xrays help us assess the spaces between teeth we can’t see directly; these are very common areas of hidden tooth decay.
A full examination can help prevent you losing more teeth!
With a thorough dental examination complete, I then grabbed my mini camera to take some pics of the worst problems. I showed him two small holes in back teeth, and explained how some simple white tooth-coloured fillings would easily fix these problems, and avoid him having to pull those teeth in 2-3 years if he left them alone. We talked a bit about smoking, lots of fruit juices, brushing habits in a casual way – I mean, none of us are perfect, right? But maybe just being aware of how some sweets, acids and smokes might cause more broken teeth will help us change our behaviour in the long run.
The outcome? Lose a couple of the most broken teeth, save a lot more by simple, easy dentistry, and making longterm habits to save your smile!
So ultimately, 2 really rotten teeth will need to be removed. Fortunately Dr Alpa Lodhiya is our trusted expert at tooth extractions, and we were able to schedule my new mate in to see her next week. A course of antibiotics and pain killers will fix the immediate problem of the painful tooth infection. A few fillings and sealants will save many more teeth from having to be pulled too. And some easy routine checkups in the future will help us keep an eye on things, so hopefully we’ll never have to pull any more teeth in the future!
I’m feeling good about this young man. He works hard, tries his best at everything, and deserves a good outcome. We’ll do everything we can to give him the best treatment possible – just like we do for all our patients at Verdant Dental. We love looking after our local regulars – we used to be on Treadwell Road, but now at the corner of Keilor Rd and Hoffmans Road. We’re next door to the Bendigo Bank and up one floor with amazing views! All new patients are treated like good friends too – we explain things, discuss your xrays and photos, and can come up with a range of treatments. Whether you’re in Niddrie, Strathmore or Essendon, just give us a call on 93793736 for an appointment! And of course, we’re so close to Airport West, Keilor, Tullamarine and Gladstone Park we get many patients from there too.
